Now you’re back in the gym motivation will be high, at least for a while, but over time motivation can be hard to maintain.
New Year’s resolutions are a distant memory, and the promise of summer is around the corner.
So where do people who make it through the year find their motivation?
It’s a question
What is the question that is more motivating than anything else?
Most of us are looking to be excited and inspired.
Everyone seeks that elusive motivation.
“How can I stay motivated?”
“If I could just stay motivated I would be fitter, healthier, thinner!”
We look for it in TV programmes and in magazines.
Well, we can tell you where that motivation lies. It lies in your reason why.
Simon Sinek is an author, motivational speaker, and marketing consultant.
In 2009 Sinek delivered a 17 minute TED Talk distilling all of his learning on what inspires organizations and individuals to create a better future for themselves.
Sinek explains that broadly, we all have access to the same resources, but some identify, understand, and harness their biggest resource
He calls it your “Why”
Sinek explains that we communicate (with ourselves as well as others) from 3 standpoints, one of which, the “why” is motivational.
- Why you need to do something (motivational)
- How you will do something (not motivational)
- What it is you will do (not motivational)
What we will do is not motivational because it often comes from a logical rather than an emotional place, it comes as a big list and so can be overwhelming and just describes tasks that we would rather not do.
Think about me explaining to you each exercise you will do in your workout today (a big list of them) all the sets, all the reps all the unpleasant details.
You get the idea, not very motivating.
The same with how we will do them. All the coaching points, the positions, the postures…dull.
However, if I spent a little time explaining why we do it and how it will help you get the fitness you want to do the 5k run with family members who are relying on you to raise charity money for cancer research….
There is a bit more motivation in that? Right?
Especially if the reason why appeals to who you see yourself as (your identity). In this case, a caring Mother or Father of 2 who wants to spend more quality time with her family and contribute to and inspire her/his children to be healthy, whilst supporting a friends money-raising efforts for a meaningful cause.
Now we are talking…
In his book Mans Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl documents his ordeal as a Holocaust survivor and explains that to stay motivated he came to understand we must have a really strong reason why. He actually identified the 3 underlying reasons that motivate all of us at our core.
- You are motivated to be with your Family/Partner or loved ones
- You are motivated to complete your life’s work
- You are motivated to undertake some form of incredible challenge and suffering that will act as an example or inspiration to others
So you if you need a clue to identify your key why there you have it.
The trick is to then undertake a training and nutrition lifestyle that enables you to do more of your key motivator and be that person to the best of your ability.
A big part of the question is “who do you want to be? and how does your training help you be that person each day?
People who carry on through “Motivationless March” understand who they want to be and how their training approach gives them the strength, energy and discipline to be that person.
Those who have a ‘why’ to live, can bear with almost any ‘how’.
Consider the story of Dick Hoyt who in his 60’s completes Ironman Triathlons.
Impressive enough on its own.
Dick however undertakes this challenge with his son in a dinghy, on the front of his bike and then in a wheelchair for the run.
That is a 2.4 mile open water swim, a 112 mile Bike Ride, then a 26.2 mile marathon.
Yes, all in one go on the same day.
Why does he do this?
His son is disabled and told him that when he runs with him, he feels free.
That is Dick Hoyt’s why,
What is yours?
We all need goals that help provide us, and those we love with joy and meaning.
Beyond just getting a bit fitter and healthier.
